In(cr)edible Gingerbreads

I suppose I won’t surprise you with this new tutorial. It’s December after all – there are hundreds of Christmas tutorials on the Internet and that number is still growing ;). Since salt dough is an easy-to-get material, I decided to show you how you can make gingerbread decorations. But beware! This tutorial is highly dangerous for family foodies, ‘cause they can break their teeth by mistake. For their own good, best if you warn them about making this kind of gingerbreads ;).

estimated time: 2-3 days (including drying process)

You need:
  • salt dough (you can find the recipe in “Handicraft Techniques”)
  • cocoa
  • wooden skewers
  • pastry cutters
  • white paint
  • rolling pin
  • paintbrush
  • oven
  • piece of paper or a chopping board
Step by step:


1. Make a small hole in the salt dough and pour a teaspoon of cocoa (you can pour more, if you want the dough to be darker). Then knead until it’s evenly brown.

2. Roll the dough on the chopping board until it’s 1-1,5 cm thick.


3. Cut the Christmas shapes in the dough and stick a wooden skewer in them.


4. Heat the oven to 70-80°C and dry the decorations for about 12 hours.

5. After drying, paint the gingerbreads with the white paint to make it look like frosting and that’s it.
