Homemade Patches

"You don't need a patch on your arm to have honor."
                                                                           (A Few Good Men; 1992)

How many times did you find yourself in a situation when it was impossible to find any merch of your favourite band because it’s not very popular? How many of you wanted a patch with your favourite game or anime but you’re short on money at conventions? It happens to me very often. In today’s tutorial I want to show you how to make a patch with your favourite logo using just a piece of denim and paint. It is also a perfect tutorial for punk rock fans, since handmade patches would be a great addition to their outfit.

difficulty:easy
estimated time: 15-20 minutes (one patch)

You need:
  • white fabric paint
  • paintbrush
  • sewing machine or needle and thread
  • a printout of your beloved logo
  • tailor scissors
  • paper knife
  • tape

Tutorial steps:

1. Cut out the shape of your logo using the paper knife to make a template.

2. Cut out a rectangular piece from the denim – it should be slightly (2-3 cm) bigger than the logo.

3. Using the tape stick the template to the piece of denim. Make sure the shape is directly in the center..

4. Dip the end of the paintbrush in the white paint and dry it a little. There shouldn’t be much paint on your brush, ‘cause it can get under the template.

5. Holding your paintbrush upright, fill the template „stamping” it with paint. Hold the fragile elements of the template in place to prevent them from moving.

6. Remove the templete. Fold the edges of your patch and flatten them with your hand. You can also iron them or pin them with pins.

7. Using the sewing machine sew the patch along the edges to prevent them from fraying. Your patch is ready to use, you can begin mass production!
